Well, Monday morning started off in chaos…we decided we would finally update my son’s closet, but not just a 10-minute tidy, a full revamp.
Here’s the rough before shot (it’s been a work in progress for a while now):

This was the first step, basically, the “no turning back now” technique to getting organized.

Then it was all hands on deck for prepping, sanding, painting, sorting, purging, you name it. My son’s book nook got a temporary relocation…so many books…when it comes to purging, they are my kryptonite. He did get rid of a small box though, I was proud of him. (Although he didn’t want to wear pants, go figure).
Since we’re still under a stay-at-home order, we weren’t going shopping anywhere to get supplies, so we worked with what we had. My son (and us) wanted a rug in his closet since the bottom half is a reading nook. I searched online for a runner that would work, but none were the right size.
We did, however, find an awesome truck and car rug on Wayfair that was on sale and perfect for my vehicle-obsessed child. So…yep, I cut up the existing area rug and taped it off to make the runner for the closet. My son looked at his rug at one point and with wide eyes looked at me and exclaimed, “What did you do to my rug?!” I reminded him the cool truck rug was coming, and he was okay after that. (We did tell him that this was a special project and that we don’t normally cut up our rugs.)
My son also was wary of the long curtains on his window, something about them was scary to him, so we had taken them down a while ago. I cut them down to size to hang in front of the closet shelves, and my plan is to use the remainder to make a matching valance for his window.
In the end, we’re all pretty happy with how it turned out; my son even started off sleeping in his closet that night. (He moved to his bed eventually.) The next step is adding a magnet board…not sure when that will be, but one day soon!

What projects are you trying to tackle while you’re staying at home? 🙂
