When you travel, you like to let loose, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you want to loosen your belt buckle
Things are starting to open up across the country, and more people are starting to revisit potential vacation plans. After being stuck at home for a while, many of us probably have already suffered some setbacks to healthy eating and sleeping habits (if we had any to begin with, lol). If you’re planning a trip, whether it’s a big to-do, or a simple weekend getaway, staying healthy can be a real challenge. Although it is a vacation, and you want to splurge a bit, you can still do a few things to help keep yourself on the right track and feeling good during your travels.
Here are four quick tips to help you feel your best while you travel:
Pack Some Snacks — Of course, you don’t want to spend your entire vacation snacking, but packing some healthy snacks to have on hand can be a lifesaver. Let’s face it, a big part of the traveling experience is trying new things, including foods. You don’t want to miss out, but you also don’t want to overdo it. Make sure you eat enough of the right stuff to satisfy your appetite so that you can sample the tasty temptations (both food and drink included) without going overboard. When you do opt for higher-calorie foods, consider making some healthy food swaps to cut down on the calories without sacrificing the taste.
Get a Move on — Vacations are often about relaxing, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend the whole time kicking back and lounging by a pool (as nice as that may sound), or sleeping the day away in your hotel room. In fact, sleeping too much can make you feel even more tired, and staying still for too long can make you feel sluggish, basically, the opposite of how you want to feel. Start each day off with some movement, whether it’s a quick jog or walk, or even doing a few exercises in your hotel room. It will help you set the tone for the rest of the day, and give you the necessary energy to conquer any sightseeing that you have planned.
Stay Hydrated — Sometimes, you can get so wrapped up in the fun of a vacation that you forget about the basics, plus you’re off of your usual routine. When this happens, aside from healthy eating flying out of the window, you can forget to do even the simplest of things, like drink enough water. On top of that, many times on vacation it’s natural to drink beverages that cause dehydration, like sugary drinks and alcohol, and you end up feeling woozy and unwell (not how you want to feel when you’re on a trip).
Don’t Skimp on Sleep — While you don’t want to sleep away your entire vacation, getting enough rest during your travels is important. When you don’t get enough sleep it can wreak havoc on your entire body, including your ability to make decisions (choosing the grande margarita instead of the small or grabbing for the double-decker chocolate cake instead of a single slice), and your overall mood. Your trip isn’t going to be very fun if you’re irritated or exhausted the whole time due to lack of sleep.
If you keep these steps in mind, not only will you feel better on vacation, but you’ll enjoy it more! Plus, when you take care of your body and get enough sleep, you help support your immune system, putting yourself in a better position to fend off certain viruses. Wherever your travels take you, stay healthy, and have the time of your life!
