Five Fun and Engaging STEM Toys for Kids

Even as the world is starting to open back up, many of us are still at home trying to come up with new ways to entertain our kids (and de-stress in the process). For the days that the outdoors are simply too hot to handle and we don’t want to substitute play for an iPad, why not try STEM toys?

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These toys provide children with an opportunity to learn and have fun while they’re doing it!

STEM toys (and STEAM – where art is added into the equation) geared toward young children help foster skills like problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking. Learning about STEM now gives kids a chance to develop a love of science and technology in an easy to understand way. These toys help them remain curious and give them an opportunity to explore some of those topics mom and dad might find tricky to explain.

Need some help sorting through the wide variety of STEM and STEAM toys out there? Here’s a helpful list of five of the best for young kiddos:

  1. Crayola Build-A-Beast Shark Model Magic Craft Kit

This model magic kit from Crayola gives your little ones a way to make their own fish friend from start to finish. It gives step-by-step building instructions and even has a movable shark tail! The kit not only lets kids ages 5 and up develop their instruction-following, creativity, and construction skills, it also comes with an information guide to teach them all about this sea predator.

  1. Haifeng Educational Toy Drill STEM Learning Create Design Kit

This STEM toy introduces engineering to your kids with 193 pieces and parts to be assembled in any way they want! The kit comes with colorful blocks, nuts and bolts, a screwdriver, and an electric drill, making the construction possibilities practically endless. The product boasts its ability to develop creative and logical thinking, cooperation skills, and hand-eye coordination and is recommended for ages 3-14. (My son loves this one and has started using the tools to “fix” things around the house).

  1. Monkey Balance Cool Math Game

This interactive game helps kids conceptualize numbers with the help of miniature monkey friends. Weighted number pieces give kids the opportunity to learn basic addition in a fun, interactive way. Perfect for ages three and up, this learning game is a great asset for teaching math to your little ones. (Another one of our favorites).

  1. Gears! Gears! Gears! Starter Building Set

This STEM toy will introduce kids ages three and up to the wonders engineering. With sixty colorful pieces, this is the perfect way for kids to develop their creativity, problem-solving, and fine motor skills. With so many interlocking pieces, there are thousands of building possibilities that allow children’s imaginations to run wild! (My son is fascinated how turning one gear can make all of them spin).

  1. creatED Family Engagement Kit Writing Art Inspired Stories

Meant for children in PreK-second grade, this activity kit promotes literacy and creativity in young children. The kit includes more than 35 art supplies, three creative writing projects, and a guide for parents so play can become a family affair! Designed to counteract learning loss during the summer months, this STEAM toy will be sure to please your kids and develop their curiosity, communication skills, and critical thinking.
