Family Unplugged – Cabin in the Woods

My husband, son, and I recently spent four days in a cabin in the middle of the woods with no Wi-Fi, no TV, and pretty much no cell service. Most of the people we told this to had the same reaction…”Oh, how awful!” But, it was actually amazing!

We drove through windy roads and over hills and dips, through massive trees until we approached a little log cabin complete with a metal roof and rocking chairs on the porch. The back patio was a wooden deck, completely covered and gated with a table and chairs and grill. Inside the cabin was two small bedrooms, just big enough to fit a bed, and a living/kitchen combo area.

Behind the cabin was a massive ravine, and we saw one large tree leaning over and made a joke that it was going to fall. Well, the night before we left there was a ton of rain, and the next morning, that tree was just gone. It had completely fallen and disappeared into the depths of the ravine. My son was in awe.

We brought my son’s Little Golden Book About Bugs book along and he spent many moments trying to find and identify bugs. He wants to read this book over and over again, I think we read it at least three times a day while we were away.

We played games together. We took our dogs on walks. I rested. We grilled. I baked cookies. We took a drive. I rested. We did puzzles. We gathered leaves. I rested. See a pattern, here?

About two and a half of the days we were there were rainy, but we loved hearing the rain come down on the metal roof. My son spent a lot of time doing these water activity books (which are perfect for in the car on road trips)! On one of our drives we got to check out an old orange caboose; my son went crazy!

Overall, it was a simple trip, but the perfect one for the current times, and it was just what we needed. And we didn’t miss our phones or internet one bit.

Could you unplug for four days? What would that mean to you?
