Painting Fabric, Adding Color, and DIY Fun!

So, just a quick post today, things have been crazy!

We decided to do some DIY projects this weekend, trying to add more of our accent color through more of our main living areas. (Can you guess what color it is)? 😉

We painted a few furniture pieces, some storage bins, matting in picture frames, and also wanted to change the chair cushions…

Instead of getting new fabric (we’re on a budget after all), I decided, why not paint the fabric? I saw it done on a few design shows, and I figured the worst that could happen is it would fail terribly and I take off the fabric and replace it (our original plan, anyway).

It went well, so far! I just have to wait and see how it sets up/dries over a couple of days. I used a multi-surface satin acrylic paint. I opted to not mix it with a textile medium because I purposely wanted it to be a stiffer, more leathery look and feel when done. It definitely did that!

I sprayed down the cushion first with water, to have a wet on wet application. Definitely helps the paint go on easier too. I also lightly sanded the cushion in between coats with a fine grit sandpaper. It took three coats to get the look we wanted.

The final product!

So far so good! More projects to come, including upcycling a kitchen island, dining table, storage bench, painting a glass wall lamp, and converting a plain wall clock to one with some retro flair. Of course, I’m also teaching school again (amidst a pandemic) and running after an almost-four-year-old, while writing too, so the projects might happen slowly…but they WILL happen!

What DIY projects have your tried lately? 🙂
