When you’re a family of three (and two pups) in roughly 1330 sq ft of living space, you learn how to make every inch count! We love the size of our house; it works for us, isn’t overwhelming to take care of, and DIY projects come in at a reasonable price. But still, any square inch of extra space we can find, we grab it!
This crazy, strange “secret room” as we like to call it, is in our master bedroom closet. It is about 25 inches or so wide and about 4-feet high. So enough space to sit or kneel with head space. Who knows what it once was, but we just had a bunch of photo albums thrown in there.
Needless to say, it was a nightmare to find anything (not to mention try and maneuver around in). Plus, it looked scary and creepy. When you’re faced with a problem like that…you find a solution! And so we did…our quick weekend project…
Yep, it appears to be a room for one of our pups. And she loves it…but what it ALSO does is give us a nicer, more organized way to keep all of our photos. Plus, the gel mat makes it super easy on the knees when we need to go in and get something. In fact, a few of the boxes are even empty…that’s right! BONUS STORAGE!! Woo hoo!
It had the added perk of getting our dog’s bed off of the floor of our closet too. (It’s crazy how the little things help reduce the stress). We do still need to add a couple pieces of trim to make it look finished, but essentially we added a ceiling, some trim, shelving and a coat of paint. Then a few accessories, and we were done!
And let’s not forget our helper! Sure, it’s a toy drill, but the important thing is the lesson was there. He wanted to help, he learned a lot (especially about safety first), and he is super proud of the end result. Young kids actually enjoy helping and doing chores, so the earlier they can learn, the more likely they will be to stick with it as they get older. It’s a great lesson in responsibility.

Now it’s time to decide what our next project will be!
