We’ve all seen the classic shows and books that express the popular phrase, kids say the darndest things…well, if you didn’t already know, that is absolutely, undeniably true. The other saying that is also right on the money is, out of the mouths of babes, in other words, kids will tell it like it is.
Sometimes, I think we could all learn a lesson from many of the innocent pearls of wisdom that drop from a child’s lips, but more often than not, we give a chuckle or dismiss it as, here’s another one, kids will say anything. However, if we really pay attention, I think we’d discover a lot of truth and “a-ha moments” within the little nuggets that our kids spring on us every day.
That’s why I decided to create this page — as a place to record all of the “little nuggets” that my son says. Some are just pure, innocent fun — they don’t really make sense, but they make me laugh. Others open my eyes to just how innocent our children are when they say something and you realize that they see things completely differently.
Then there are the ones that stop me in my tracks. The ones that make me pause and reflect, and I think, wow, I was just taught an amazing lesson by this little person who has only been around for a few years. It’s a true story of how the teacher becomes the student.
So, here they are in no particular order or category, just jotted down as I hear them. When I hear more I’ll add to the list, and since my son talks all of the time, I suspect the list will grow fairly quickly.

Age 3
“Okay, Mommy, calm down.”
“Check out my moves. Ask where I got those moves! I got them at the store!” (I need to know where this store is…)
“My belly is big and powerful, and I don’t know why!” (Well, son, for me it’s usually because of one too many cupcakes…)
(already playing the sympathy card…) “My head hurts. Right here on this part of my head. It’s okay, it will feel better after I watch a show…”
“Mommy get off of me.” “But, I love you!” “I love you too, but love me from over there.” (too big for snuggles already? Nooooo! …Or just already feeling the need for personal space?)
“Daddy is so happy. Yes, he is fabulous. He’s a dancer.” (My husband is happy. He’s also fabulous. He is not a dancer)
“I don’t want the rest of my cake. You can have it, Mommy. I know you really want it.” (I have no idea what he’s talking about…ahem)
“Oh, that Mommy.” (What? What did I do, now?)
“I wish we could go to the zoo. Do you think the animals miss me?” (During our stay-at-home COVID19 experience…it made my heart hurt)
“I am not an elephant! I am a little boy, and I protect my toys! So don’t call me an elephant!” (You’re right, name-calling is not cool)
“This is TIRING to me!” (You said it, kid.)
Age 4
(In July) “Is it too early to put in my order for Christmas?”
A shower in the bathtub is a “shath.”
“My brain can’t handle all this right now.”
“Daddy, you’re the best grandpa a lightswitch can have.” (Ummm…thanks??)
