This Easter Going Out for Brunch Is a No-Go, but There Will Be Bunny Cake!

Easter is looking a lot different this year, but it’s also going to be just as special!

Every year growing up, I would go with my family to my grandmother’s for Easter brunch. We would have pancakes, eggs, fresh fruit, and all sorts of yummy deliciousness, and my grandma would make her famous bunny cake. Then we would have an Easter egg hunt in her backyard. Leading up to Easter Sunday there would be different activities, like pictures with the Easter Bunny, picnics, community egg hunts, and other fun-filled activities usually geared toward making Easter special for the kids.

Once I became a mom, I was excited for my husband and me to start our own Easter traditions with our son. We would do different activities and attend various events before Easter Sunday, and then when the special day rolled around we would go to brunch together. Then we would visit with the family to swap some Easter goodies and my son would get to participate in an egg hunt with his cousins. In honor of my grandmother, every year (even before I became a mom) I would make my own bunny cake to share with the family.

This year, thanks to COVID-19, there’s a bit of a cramp in our plans; no brunch out, no community Easter egg hunt, no special meeting with the Easter Bunny, and no traditional visit with family. However, we’re still attempting a few special, classic Easter traditions to try and keep the holiday special for our son (and for us) because it has so much meaning.

  • So, this year, there’s no brunch out, but we will make some “Bunny-Butt Pancakes” for breakfast and maybe order some yummy take-out from a local restaurant.
  • We’ll visit my parent’s house (weather permitting) and say hello through the glassdoor; my mom will have an egg hunt set up in her front yard ahead of time.
  • We already dyed some Easter eggs, always an oldie but a goodie, but we made it work with what we had; I didn’t get any dye kits or fancy embellishments.
  • We made some fun Easter crafts in anticipation of the Easter Bunny’s arrival because we sadly didn’t have carrots for him this year (but I told my son I think the Easter Bunny will understand — my son replied with his new favorite phrase, “Of course”).
  • And, most important of all, there WILL BE BUNNY CAKE, even if I don’t have my usual supplies; because carrying on traditions is important — and hey, it’s CAKE!Easter2

Easter of 2020 certainly looks a lot different from my past Easters, but I’m determined to make it just as special, maybe even egg-stra special (sorry, couldn’t resist). Wishing everyone a Happy Easter; make the most with what you have, and most importantly, make memories that will last a lifetime!

**added — here’s our Bunny Butt Pancakes, in the making and finished product! Another shout out to Lindsie at Mom’s Bistro for the inspo, and to my friend Jeff for telling me about them! Super easy and fun, and quite tasty too! Happy Easter!
