Five Things I Learned from Berry Picking

Bright and early on a Saturday morning, we packed up some snacks, lathered on the sunscreen, and headed out on a 30-mile drive to a nearby berry farm, bringing the dog along for the ride. My son LOVES blueberries, so we decided what better way to spend some time together this Father’s Day weekend then visiting a blueberry farm?

Ridemore Farm in Covington was our destination, and I had been fortunate to snag a reservation for picking on the final day of the season. Within two hours of the farm opening up the reservation line, they were fully booked; partly due to restrictions in place because of COVID-19. We were ready for adventure, and I assumed we would end up having a good time and walking away with some fresh blueberries…but we actually walked away with a whole lot more.

Here are five things that I learned from berry picking with my family:

1. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to create lasting memories.

2. The simplest of things really are often some of the most amazing.

3. There’s nothing quite like the expression of awe on a child’s face when he learns where some of his favorite food comes from…and that it’s not actually the store.

4. The sound of a child’s laugh when he experiences true joy is one of the best sounds in the world.

5. You can learn a lot when things are quiet and you just slow down and pay attention.

Wishing everyone many special moments with your family this weekend and beyond!

And now, it’s time for dessert! 😁

  1. Great human interest story Stacy! When a family ventures out together for an outing to the “blueberry” patch, it truly makes for an exciting & happy experience. The photos of your family excursion says it all – “A fun time for all”. A gorgeous day, a beautiful family, and a bucket of delicious blueberries. Couldn’t get any better – “Mission” accomplished!
